Santander UK Sort Code 2026 — How to Find Your Sort Code, Account Number and IBAN

Santander UK uses branch-specific sort codes. Here's how to find your sort code, account number, IBAN, and SWIFT/BIC — and exactly what each one is used for.

Santander UK uses branch-specific sort codes, so there’s no single sort code that applies to all Santander accounts. Your sort code depends on which branch was linked to your account when it was opened. Here’s how to find it — along with your account number, IBAN, and SWIFT/BIC code.

How to Find Your Santander Sort Code and Account Number

Via the Santander app (fastest method):

  1. Sign in to the app
  2. Tap your current account
  3. Select Account details
  4. Your 6-digit sort code and 8-digit account number are displayed — tap to copy either

Via Santander online banking:

  1. Log in at santander.co.uk
  2. Select your account from the overview
  3. Click Account details — your sort code and account number are shown

Other methods:

  • Bank statements — sort code and account number are printed at the top of each statement
  • Your debit card — the long card number is different, but some statements printed with the card include the sort code
  • Call Santander — 0330 9 123 123 (you’ll need to pass security checks first)

What Is a Sort Code?

A sort code is a 6-digit number that identifies the bank and the specific branch associated with your account. When combined with your 8-digit account number, it allows other banks to route payments to you correctly.

You’ll need your sort code and account number for:

  • Receiving UK bank transfers — Faster Payments and BACS both require sort code and account number
  • Setting up direct debits — share with employers, HMRC, energy providers, and other service providers
  • Standing orders received from other banks
  • HMRC repayments — tax refunds, Self Assessment refunds, and Child Benefit all use sort code and account number

Sort codes are not confidential. It is fine to share them with anyone who needs to pay you.

Santander UK SWIFT/BIC Code

Santander UK’s SWIFT/BIC code is ABBYGB2L.

This is required when:

  • Receiving an international transfer — give the sender your SWIFT/BIC alongside your IBAN
  • Sending an international payment — the Santander app or online banking will usually prompt for the recipient’s SWIFT/BIC

SWIFT/BIC codes are publicly listed — sharing yours is completely safe.

Santander UK IBAN

An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is the international format of your UK account details. Banks worldwide use it to route international transfers correctly.

UK IBANs are structured as:

GB + 2 check digits + ABBY + your 6-digit sort code + your 8-digit account number

Example format: GB60 ABBY 0901 2912 3456 78

Always use the IBAN shown in the Santander app or online banking. Do not attempt to build your IBAN manually — errors in the check digits will cause transfers to fail or be misdirected.

What Is Safe to Share?

Your sort code and account number can only be used to receive payments into your account. Anyone who has them cannot withdraw your money or set up outgoing payments. Share them confidently with:

  • Your employer for payroll
  • HMRC for tax credits, refunds, or Child Benefit
  • Friends, family, and clients paying you
  • Direct debit originators (utilities, subscriptions)

Keep private: your debit card number and CVV, your online banking password, your PIN, and any one-time passcodes. Santander will never ask for these in full by phone, email, or text. If someone does, it’s a scam — hang up and call 0330 9 123 123 directly.
