The Full Landscape of UK Disability Benefits

Most people know about PIP, but the UK disability benefits system has multiple layers. Understanding which benefits apply to you — and how they interact — is essential for maximising your entitlement.

Working-Age Disability Benefits

BenefitWho It’s ForAdministered By
Personal Independence Payment (PIP)Disabilities affecting daily life and/or mobility; age 16 to State Pension age (England & Wales)DWP
Adult Disability Payment (ADP)Same as PIP but for Scottish residentsSocial Security Scotland
Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)Those unable to work due to health conditions (legacy benefit; new claims on UC)DWP
Universal Credit (LCWRA element)Those assessed as having limited capability for work and work-related activity via UCDWP
Carer’s AllowanceUnpaid carers (not the disabled person, but links eligibility)DWP

Older People and Disability

BenefitWho It’s For
Attendance AllowancePeople of State Pension age with care needs (not mobility)
Pension Age Disability Payment (Scotland)Replacing Attendance Allowance for Scottish residents
Severe disability addition (Pension Credit)Added to Pension Credit if you get Attendance Allowance (or the PIP daily living part), usually live alone and no one gets Carer’s Allowance for you

Children and Young People

BenefitWho It’s For
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for ChildrenChildren under 16 with care and/or mobility needs (England & Wales)
Child Disability Payment (CDP, Scotland)Scottish equivalent of DLA for children
Disabled child element, Universal CreditExtra UC for a child who gets DLA or PIP (tax credits ended in April 2025)

How Disability Benefits Interact with Each Other

Claiming one disability benefit often triggers eligibility for others. Key interactions:

  • PIP daily living component (either rate) → Carer’s Allowance for your carer, the severe disability premium or addition (legacy benefits and Pension Credit, with other conditions), and exemption from the benefit cap
  • PIP mobility with 8+ points on “moving around”, or 10 points on the specific distress descriptor of “planning and following journeys” → automatic Blue Badge in England; the enhanced mobility rate also unlocks the Motability Scheme, and PIP at any rate qualifies for the Disabled Persons Railcard
  • Universal Credit LCWRA → adds £217.26–£429.80/month to the UC standard allowance depending on when your award started (2026/27), exemption from benefit cap
  • Attendance Allowance → unlocks Carer’s Allowance for your carer, disability addition in Pension Credit

Disability and Work: What You Need to Know

Claiming disability benefits does not mean you can’t work:

  • PIP is entirely unaffected by whether or how much you work. It is assessed on need, not on earnings.
  • ESA: you can do permitted work of less than 16 hours a week, earning up to £203.50 a week (2026/27).
  • UC LCWRA: if you are in the LCWRA group you are not expected to look for work. You can work, with your earnings reducing UC through the taper; DWP may look again at your capability for work if you start working more.
  • Access to Work: a DWP grant scheme that funds workplace adaptations, support workers, and travel costs for disabled workers, up to a yearly cap. Apply at gov.uk/access-to-work.
