How Scoring Works

Doing an activity reliably. You can only be treated as able to do an activity if you can do it safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly and within a reasonable time.

  • Safely: in a way that's unlikely to cause harm to you or anyone else.
  • To an acceptable standard.
  • Repeatedly: as often as the activity reasonably needs to be done.
  • Within a reasonable time: no more than twice as long as it would normally take someone without your condition.

Which descriptor applies. A descriptor applies to you if it's true on over 50% of the days; if two or more are, the one scoring the most points applies.

  • A descriptor applies if it's satisfied on over 50% of the days in the required period.
  • If two or more descriptors each apply on over 50% of the days, the one scoring the most points counts.
  • If no single descriptor applies on over 50% of the days, but descriptors that score points do when added together, the one that applies on the most days counts (on equal days, the one scoring the most points).

For each of the 10 activities, you’re matched to the descriptor that best fits your ability. Only the highest-scoring descriptor from each activity counts. Points from all 10 activities are added together.

Tips for Describing Your Difficulties

  • Describe how you manage on most days, including bad days: A descriptor applies if it's satisfied on over 50% of the days in the required period.
  • Be specific — “I can’t stand at the cooker for more than 5 minutes due to back pain” is better than “I find cooking difficult”
  • Mention aids you use: needing an aid or appliance usually scores 2 points on a daily living activity (1 point for managing medication)
  • Describe what happens if you try — “If I try to wash my hair, my shoulder dislocates and I need help getting my arm back”
  • Include mental health impacts — Can’t cook because depression prevents you from getting out of bed? That counts.
  • Think about safety — Have you burned yourself cooking? Fallen in the shower? These indicate you need supervision.
