How to Apply for PIP
PIP applications are made to the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions):
- Start your claim by phone: 0800 917 2222 (Monday–Friday, 8am–6pm). They will take your details and send you a form called PIP2 (“How your disability affects you”).
- Complete the PIP2 form carefully — describe how your condition affects you on your worst days, not your best days. The form asks about each of the daily living and mobility activities scored in the assessment.
- Submit medical evidence — GP letters, specialist reports, hospital correspondence. You can attach these to your form.
- Attend the assessment (if required) — usually with a health professional from Capita or Atos, either by phone/video or in person.
- Receive the decision — DWP usually decides within 4 weeks of the assessment.
Mandatory Reconsideration and Appeal
If you are refused PIP or awarded a lower rate than expected:
| Step | Timeline | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Mandatory Reconsideration | Within 1 month of decision | Request DWP review in writing — explain why the decision is wrong |
| Tribunal Appeal | After Mandatory Reconsideration | Free appeal to Social Security and Child Support Tribunal |
| Continue receiving benefit | During appeal | You can stay on your current award during the appeal process |
Around 70% of PIP decisions that reach tribunal are overturned in favour of the claimant. Providing detailed written evidence — particularly from treating clinicians — significantly improves success rates.
PIP Review Process
PIP awards are not permanent. DWP issues reviews periodically (typically every 2–10 years depending on the award). When a review is due, you receive a letter and must complete a new PIP2 form. Your award continues at the current rate until the review is decided.
