Before You Apply

Check Your Eligibility

To claim Universal Credit you must live in the UK, be 18 or over (16 or 17 in some cases), be under State Pension age, and have £16,000 or less in money, savings and investments.
  • You're under State Pension age; a couple where only one has reached it can still claim, and the claim stops when both have.
  • If you live with your partner, you make one joint claim, even if your partner isn't eligible, and both your incomes and savings count.

You can claim if you’re working on a low income as well as if you’re out of work.
