Benefits During and After Leaving

Universal Credit

Feature How It Helps
Split payments Your UC share paid directly to you (while still with partner)
Separate claim Make your own claim when you leave
Advance payment Emergency money within days
Easement Your work requirements may be suspended
Moving costs Can be covered through UC or council support

UC Domestic Abuse Easement

If you’re experiencing or have recently experienced domestic abuse:

  • Work-related requirements can be removed for 13 weeks
  • This gives you time to find safety, seek support, and stabilise
  • Tell your work coach (you can request a private appointment)
  • You don’t need to provide evidence of abuse to get the easement

Split Payments

If you’re on a joint UC claim and experiencing abuse:

  1. Request that your share of UC is paid directly to you
  2. Your work coach can arrange this — ask in a private appointment
  3. The total UC amount stays the same but is split between you
  4. This can be done without your partner’s knowledge if needed

A court can grant an occupation order giving you the right to stay in the family home (and excluding the abuser). This can be obtained:

  • Through a solicitor (legal aid available for DA cases)
  • As part of a non-molestation order

Financial Orders on Separation

  • Child maintenance through CMS (12% of abuser’s income for 1 child)
  • Spousal maintenance through court
  • Division of assets (through divorce proceedings)
