Benefits for Students — What You Can Claim While Studying

Council Tax Exemption

Full-Time Students

Living alone (student) Fully exempt — no Council Tax
All occupants are students Property exempt
Mixed household (students + non-students) Non-students pay (students are ‘disregarded’)
Student living with one non-student Non-student qualifies for 25% single person discount
Summer holidays Exempt continues if enrolled on a course

Getting Your Exemption

  1. Request a council tax exemption certificate from your university or college
  2. Send it to your local council
  3. Exemption applies from the date you start your course

Specific Groups

Student Parents
